“The most important story ever written for kids who have or will suffer the effects of a directd hit from a hurricane.”
Whenever a hurricane threatens a community, the parents and grandparents get very busy with hurricane preparations. Kids are often fearful and have their own hurricane preparations to make. If the storm hits, then kids need even more help dealing with the devastation and recovery. That’s why this book and audio CD has quickly become a national sensation—featured on CNN and many other media outlets.
Created by hurricane kids for hurricane kids, “When the Hurricane Blew” offers a heartwarming story full of fun, music, and sound effects to help kids understand what is happening around them whever a hurricane threatens or strikes. It offers tips from kids who have been there. It is a great way to help kids understand what to expect and how to deal with the fear and uncertainty caused by an approaching hurricane and its aftermath. This professional production was done in cooperation with public radio insuring the quality you would expect.
This story was written and performed by a team of 4th grade kids (affectionately known as Mann’s Miracles) who have personally experienced direct hits from two major hurricanes within a single year and the resulting devastation to their Gulf Breeze, Florida community. They know first hand what it’s like to be a kid, watch a hurricane approach, and then experience the community-wide tragedy it can cause. The experience moved them to create this story full of sound effects and music. It’s sure to help kids understand what to expect as the storm approaches and … in the event of a direct hit … find comfort in knowing that their hearts and lives will heal.
The royalties generated by the sale of this audio are donated to hurricane affected kids through the Hurricane Kids Network — a nonprofit hurricane relief corporation started by the kids and run by an all-kid board of directors.
“It is an excellent tool that children and adults can use to understand and cope with a disaster.”
—Mike Burleson, Lead School Psychologist, Santa Rosa District Schools.
“Having experienced many hurricanes personally and having assisted hundreds of elementary school children through the hurricane process as a school counselor, Certified Traumatologist and Disaster Medical Assistance Team Mental Health Specialist, I’d like to say that this positive account of what the hurricane experience is like for kids is RIGHT ON!
Mann’s Miracles have captured every essence of the hurricane experience, step-by-step, from before the beginning to past the ending. The added bonuses for other hurricane kids, besides knowing what to expect, are that there are many prevention steps suggested and many innovative ways to pass the time in the austere hurricane environment, all of them ‘by hurricane kids for hurricane kids.’ Further, the hope and profession of faith that ‘we got through it you will, too’ is the most powerful and securing message one child can give another. This is the most important book ever written for kids who have or will suffer the effects of a direct hit from a hurricane.

Unbelievable!!! As an elementary teacher, in Long Beach, MS, I am grateful for the resilience of this group of kids. Going back to school, after Hurricane Katrina was a difficult task, but listening to this story was close to the first thing we did in my class. The kids do an amazing job of telling the entire experience of a hurricane from a child’s point of view, from packing a few of your favorite things to the long gas lines and the PODS that are sitting in people’s driveways. It is a MUST for schools along the Gulf of Mexico. Great job, kids!!
